Before they set off, there was a rumor amongst the boys that they were going to be stationed in Bermuda. Alas, Reyðarfjörður is a far cry from Bermuda, but for the next years, the soldiers made it their home.
This tour combines hiking and exploring the nature of Reyðarfjörður with delving into the history of the town. We tell the story of the young men from the United Kingdom who battled the harsh conditions and struggled to settle in, in a land both foreign and strange.
KOYLI stands for the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. On the 20th of January 1942, they set out on a training mission that resulted in the largest number of casualties that the British forces ever suffered while stationed in Iceland.
Itinerary: This hiking tour starts by the shopping mall Molinn in downtown Reyðarfjörður. From there we hike up along the river Búðará and past the Wartime Museum and up to the waterfall Búðarárfoss. We hike up and past the waterfall. On our way back to the start we will visit the Wartime Museum and experience the war time life in Reyðarfjörður, during the World War II.
